Here's the honest explanation, because most brands won't give you one. Cheap gold-plated jewellery marks your skin for two reasons: the plating is only a few microns thick, and the metal underneath is a low-grade alloy loaded with nickel. Once that thin layer wears through (usually in a matter of days) your skin meets the nickel, reacts, and leaves the green mark everyone's had at least once.

This is heavy 14K gold plating over hypoallergenic stainless steel. Nickel-free and lead-free, so there is nothing underneath to react with your skin, and enough gold on top that ordinary daily wear doesn't get through it.

You can shower in it, sleep in it, work out in it and get caught in the rain in it. The only two things that shorten the life of any plated jewellery are chlorine and salt water — if you swim in it, rinse it under the tap afterwards and dry it with cloth. Do that and it will outlast most of what's in your jewellery drawer.

The chain is 15.5 inches with a 2-inch extender, so it adjusts anywhere between 15.5" and 17.5". That's a short, high-sitting length: the pendant lands just under the collarbone.

· You prefer it lower, or you have a broader neck or fuller bust — wear it at 17.5"
